An aging undocumented population: Implications for complex care and communities
Undocumented older adults face pervasive barriers that impede their ability to age well in their homes and in their communities. They lack access to healthcare services and other city, state, and federal programs typically provided to older adults, and as a result, healthcare workers must devise creative and innovative solutions to care for their patients. In order to understand the needs and opportunities to better care for the aging undocumented community in Illinois, Rush University Medical Center commissioned a demographic report and convened a cross-sector collaborative of leaders in aging, healthcare, and immigrant services to discuss the direct practice and structural policy implications of the state’s aging undocumented population. This report found a 13-fold increase of undocumented individuals in Illinois who will move into their senior years by 2030.

This webinar will discuss policy and complex care practice implications of an aging population of undocumented individuals in Illinois and nationally, and share how the report has fueled expanded Medicaid coverage in Illinois. The webinar will incorporate voices from collaborative members Padraic Stanley and Teresa Berumen of Rush, who have personal and professional experience with undocumented immigrants, older adults, and the intersections within these communities, as well as testimonials and stories of impacted undocumented older adults.
